Best Beaches for Family Photos in Fort Myers, Sanibel & Captiva

Southwest Florida is one of the most beautiful places to photograph families, and many of the families I work with are visiting Fort Myers, Sanibel, or Captiva on vacation. The Gulf sunsets, soft sand, and open shoreline create a setting that feels relaxed and natural for family photos.

But each beach has a slightly different feel.

Lighting, shoreline features, and how busy a location gets can all change the experience of a session. Over the years I’ve photographed families across the area and a few locations consistently stand out for how beautifully they photograph.

If you’re planning family photos while visiting Southwest Florida, these are some of the best beaches to consider.

Bowditch Point Park — Fort Myers Beach

Bowditch Point sits at the northern tip of Fort Myers Beach and is one of my favorite places for family photos.

What makes this location special is the variety it offers within a short walk. There’s a wide open shoreline with soft sand, tall sea grass that moves in the breeze, and a rocky jetty that creates beautiful texture in photographs. The beach here also tends to feel more open and natural compared to other access points along Fort Myers Beach.

Because of the space and variety, Bowditch works wonderfully for families with children. Kids can explore, run along the sand, or play near the water while we capture the natural interactions that make family photos feel genuine.

It’s a location that allows a session to unfold slowly and naturally.

Sanibel Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach on Sanibel Island is one of the most recognizable spots in the area and offers a unique look compared to many other beaches nearby.

The shoreline curves gently around the point, which creates beautiful layers of water, sand, and sky at sunset. The historic lighthouse also adds a subtle sense of place if you’d like a few images that reflect the character of Sanibel Island.

What many families love about Lighthouse Beach is the atmosphere. Even during busy seasons, it often feels calm and unhurried. That relaxed energy makes it easy for families to settle in, walk along the shoreline, and simply enjoy being together during the session.

Captiva Beach

Captiva has a very different rhythm from the rest of the area.

The beach feels quieter and slower, with long stretches of sand and fewer crowds. Sessions here tend to feel especially relaxed, which makes it a beautiful choice for couples, maternity sessions, and families who want a peaceful setting.

Evenings on Captiva often feel calm and unhurried. Families walk along the waterline, kids search for shells, and the session unfolds naturally as the sun lowers over the Gulf.

For many visitors, Captiva becomes one of the most memorable parts of their trip, and it’s a wonderful place to capture that time together.

Choosing the Right Beach for Your Fort Myers Family Photos

Each of these beaches offers something slightly different.

Some families are drawn to the open shoreline and variety of Bowditch Point. Others love the iconic scenery of Sanibel’s Lighthouse Beach, while Captiva offers a quieter setting that feels especially relaxed.

When we plan your session, I help guide you toward the location that will photograph beautifully while also fitting the experience you want for your family.

Because the most meaningful photos often come from simply slowing down and enjoying the moment together.
